iFarmer is an impact tech start-up which has developed an online platform that enables anyone in
Bangladesh to easily sponsor in farming and livestock. We want to portray our self as portfolio managers for our sponsor's agriculture and livestock shares. Agricultural financing is still a ‘rocket science’ in Bangladesh since most farmers do not have the inputs to reach the full harvest potential of their resources as it is very hard for small farmers to access loans from banks and formal institutions. Farm sponsors can easily sponsor small to medium farms, making funds easily accessible to these farmers. This exactly what iFarmer, a Bangladeshi crowdsourcing impact Agri-tech start-up is doing.
iFarmer is in a strategic partnership with CARE Bangladesh to work on SDC – Shomoshti Project for
Strengthening Access to Finance for Poor and Disadvantaged in Bull Fattening sub-sector. Additionally, the company has secured funding on the pre-seed stage of Start-up Bangladesh and has been acknowledged on Echoing Green's Social Impact talent report. The company has also won 2019 ESCAP - Digital Solutions for Women Entrepreneurs from the United Nations' FinTech Innovation Fund.
iFarmer launches Shariah Compliant Farm, the model been vetted by Islamic Research Centre
Bangladesh. The sponsorship model works as profit shared model of cattle. To maintain the transparency of the farm here is the distribution of the sponsored amount for each cattle
- iFarmer service charge = (10%) = 4,500 BDT
- Benevolent fund = 1,000 BDT
- Cattle Price= 36,500-38,500 BDT
- Feed Cost= 1000-3000 (Depends on the cattle price)
Return on sponsorship to be distributed within the following criteria:
- Maturity = 1 year
- Sponsor gets = 40% of profit + initial capital
- Farmer gets = 50% of profit
- iFarmer gets = 10% as service revenue
Our Shariah Farms are based on a portfolio model, where the sponsor gets profit portion based on the return of the overall portfolio of 40 cattle of each farm, not on specific cattle. From our previous experience, our expectation of the return would be between 15-25%.
For this farm, iFarmer has a farmer capacity of 500 skilled farmers who are experienced livestock farmers with adequate training. As per Islamic Shariah, any and all forms of loss will be mitigated with utmost sincerity from the available benevolent fundraised by the company. iFarmer consists of sector experts who continuously monitor operations to minimize the risk of loss within their best capacity.
